ABOUT ME

I became a faculty member at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in 2004, teaching in the music education program.

For many years I have been drumming in rock, jazz and Brazilian music groups, playing in live shows and recordings. Among the projects and artists I have performed with, I can mention Das Fossem, Violectra, Casa de Marimbondo, Härd:On, Tribores, Orquestra Rock, Jennifer Licko, Marise Marra, Marília Corrêa, Paulo Aggio Trio, Yumi e os Sensonautas, U2 Cover, Leandro Bonfim e Banda B, Remo Pellegrini, Karmanguia, Queentet Jazz and Scottish Link Pipe Band.

I started taking drum lessons with Jayme Pladevall in 1985 and got my Bachelors degree in Music from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) in 1992. Beginning in 96 I had a 3 year period in New York, studying at Drummers Collective and taking lessons with Michael Lauren and Kim Plainfield, among many other teachers.

In the US, I got involved with Hudson Music, working in the production of educational DVDs of drummers such as Gregg Bissonette and Thomas Lang, and also handling the interviews for Modern Drummer Festival DVDs. Interviewing great musicians like Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Stewart Copeland, Steve Smith and many others was a very enriching experience. That work continued until 2006, when YouTube came into the scene and changed the educational video world forever.

Returning to the academic environment, I got my Master's degree in 2002 and my Doctor's degree in 2010, both at the School of Communication and Arts at the University of São Paulo (USP), with researches about music education, technologies and distance education. When I started the Master's program, at the end of the 1990's, internet was not even close to what it is today - there were few researches about the use of that new thing for music teaching and learning.

As a drummer, I continued searching for opportunities to perform. I played in percussion festivals such as Batuka! (2002, 2004 e 2009) and the Internacional Percussion Festival of the Tatuí Conservatory (2005), with drumset quartet Casa de Marimbondo and with Tribores.

With Das Fossem, I played as an opening act for Scorpions (Credicard Hall) and Winger (Carioca Clube), in 2010. I also performed in many shows within SESC and SESI theaters, especially with Tribores and with Marise Marra, between 2006 and 2016.

With Orquestra Rock, since 2016 I have performed concerts in arenas with some of the biggest bands in Brazilian rock, such as Ira!, Jota Quest and Skank, and artists like Frejat, Marcelo Nova and Dinho Ouro Preto.

I was part of the musical theater in São Paulo, playing in “Cole Porter – Ele Nunca Disse que me Amava” (2004), of Charles Möeller and Cláudio Botelho; and “Suburbano Coração” (2003), of Chico Buarque and Naum Alves de Souza.

During the 90's, before going to the US, I played with the group Violectra in various festivals around São Paulo State, from which the highlight was a concert we performed with Orquestra Sinfônica de Campinas, under the maestro Benito Juarez in 94, Right after that I began playing drums for international artists of dance music in their Brazilian tours. There were dozens of shows with Playahitty, Nevada, Venus, Joy Salinas and La Bouche - the latter being a word hit with "Be My Lover" at the time.

I worked for Batera & Percussão magazine during two years and wrote several articles for that publication, most about the production of DVDs that I was doing in the US.

Nowadays I try to participate in congresses and scientific events as frequently as possible, resarching about drumming and the use of technologies in music education, and I never miss an opportunity to do what I enjoy the most: playing the drums!
